My Story
Last Chair Designs Shop Circa Summer 2016
Last Chair Designs first got its start in 2014 a few years after college when I started making Adirondack ski chairs for my family using old skis. Soon I was making chairs for a lot of people with no legit business plan. My day job at that time was working for a ski resort in Park City, Utah, which was awesome because I love skiing and the culture that surrounds it. I skied every waking moment I had free. Thus my company name came to be too hung over from the night before to get first chair but always stuck around for last chair. Last Chair Designs was born.
My first shop was a shed in my parents’ backyard. I made just enough money to fuel my wood shop addiction, buy a few pairs of skis here and there and renovate my condo. My business grew as I started making corn hole boards and selling them locally.
I left the resort in 2016 seeking the almighty job with great benefits and landed at the University of Utah Health Care Clinics. At this time LCD continued to grow so I continually invested in new tools. I bought a planer, watched a bundle of YouTube and Instagram videos and started making end grain cutting boards, This was somewhat of a turning point for me because I now had products that could be easily shipped. Game changer!, I started shipping all across the country; even had an international order. I used Instagram to sell my custom pieces and even went to a few local art fairs. Along with all the cutting boards I was making I still found time to make the ski chairs, the corn hole boards and a lot of custom work along the way. I really enjoyed the custom work making anything from doggy dish holders to mirrors and wall art.
Things slowed down in the shop when I met the love of my life and her two kids in 2018. I became a family man and I moved further away from my shop, which made it difficult to keep the business running. I made boards here and there for friends weddings and a personal board for my new house with my wife. Best thing that ever happened to me was meeting her. Second best was moving into a brand new house that was builder grade which meant it had an unfinished basement. Which meant I could eventually have my shop in my own basement. This house has also given me the opportunity to hone my skills, as I finished the entire basement on my own (minus the sheetrock). I also did a pretty spectacular barn wood wall in our main family room. And installed a pretty kick ass wet bar in the basement with concrete countertops that we poured ourselves. While I may not want LCD to do construction or renovations, by doing these projects it allowed my custom work to shine.
I enjoy making things with my hands always have probably always will and in 2021 I took my business legit. I quit my day job, something that had become extremely toxic and I was miserable at, and decided to get Last Chair Design up and running again and give it the ole college try. Starting out with a website and a ton of fresh ideas, increased knowledge, and wisdom.
The new LCD will showcase my love of wood working and food by bringing you the highest quality end-grain cutting boards in a variety of sizes ranging from 12’’ wide to a whopping 18’’ wide. A plethora of charcuterie boards in a variety of sizes and wood types for all your bougie cheese party needs. New products will come in the form of candles and candle holders and centerpieces. I have never liked wasting wood and a lot of the crazy cutting board designs come from the scrap bin, one of a kinds and limited production runs will be sold in the One Offs section of the website. This is where I will also test out some R&D for new products, think mirrors and wall art, just to see if people are interested. The Custom Projects section showcases some of the really cool custom pieces I have made over the years. Large mirrors and wall art pieces, barn wood walls that I’ve done. This is a section of the website I hope to continue to develop and grow as my shop and my skills continue to develop.
